An Overview of the Best Pool Lighting Options

Do you like to host parties and gatherings in your backyard? If so, why not impress your guests with some fun swimming pool party lights? You’d be amazed at how lighting can turn a plain-looking swimming pool into a work of art. You can put the lighting underneath the water to change its color or around the pool area to create a better ambience. There are so many ways that pool lighting can create a beautiful outdoor haven for your family and guests.

Hire a Trained Professional

Anytime you deal with water and electricity simultaneously, you should hire a licensed electrician for assistance. Pool lighting installations are dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. A trained professional can assure that your pool water stays safe for people, especially with submerged lighting fixtures. The electrician will set up the electrical wiring safely inside or around the pool, depending on the type of lighting system. Their fees range anywhere from under $200 to about $700.

Submerged Lighting

Another safety factor is the IP value of the pool lighting system. The IP value indicates the lighting system’s level of liquid and dirt resistance. The rule of thumb is to choose a lighting system with a 68 IP value if using submerged pool lights. It is the best way to ensure that dirt won’t cover the lights and diminish their brightness for the swimmers.

You’ll find many color options available for the lighting. You can choose one color or multiple colors. The important thing is to focus on the types of underweight lights. That will make a big difference in the installation process and the lighting’s appearance afterwards.

Flush-Mounted LED Pool Lights

Flush-mounted LED pool lights are flat light fixtures installed against the pool walls. They don’t protrude outwards like surface-mounted lights. You must install the flush-mounted lights at the same time you construct your in-ground swimming pool.

Surface-Mounted LED Pool Lights

Surface-mounted LED pool lights are mounted and installed on the interior of the pool walls. They are the easiest to install because they don’t require you to integrate them into the pool walls. Instead, you can install them on the pool wall surfaces after the pool is constructed. The only downside is that the lights protrude from the walls.

Surface-Mounted Halogen Pool Lights

Halogen pool lights are cheaper to purchase than LED pool lights, but you’ll have a much greater energy bill at the end of each month. But like the LED lights, the halogen lights are easy to install.

Submersible LED Lights

Submersible LED lights do not get installed anywhere. You can simply drop the lights into your pool and let them sink to the bottom. They will illuminate the water surface instantly. Anyone who doesn’t want to spend money on a complicated installation should choose these lights.

Exterior Pool Lighting Options

Pool lighting doesn’t just concern the interior of your pool. You should also consider the lighting around the exterior of your pool. There are so many more options for exterior pool lighting, such as brightness, shapes, colors, and light frequency. The three primary exterior pool lighting options include:

LED Flood Lighting

Floodlights can illuminate larger areas quickly. They are cheap and easy to install. You don’t even need to purchase any particular type of LED floodlights. Just visit your local hardware store, and you should find all the supplies and hardware required to install them around your pool area.

Pool Garden Lighting

Do you have landscaping or gardening around your pool area? If so, you can illuminate your surrounding plant life with pool garden lighting. They can illuminate everything from the flowers and bushes to the paved walkway leading to your pool.

Feature Lighting

Feature lighting can illuminate a particular feature of your pool area, such as yard accents and waterfalls. The lights come in all different colors, so take your pick.

Halogen Pool Lights vs. LED Pool Lights

You can choose between halogen pool light fixtures and LED pool light fixtures. Each light source is available for every type of pool lighting setup that we mentioned above. Let’s examine their differences:

Halogen is the traditional pool light source that has been around for decades. It is cheaper to purchase upfront but much less energy efficient. You won’t find too many color options other than white or yellow. They cost anywhere from $150 to $300. If you don’t like to perform maintenance very often, you’ll be pleased with the halogen lights. Maintenance is only required once per season.

Halogen lights have a lifespan of anywhere between 5 and 20 years. It depends on how often you use them and how well you take care of them.

LED pool lights are more expensive to purchase up front, but they are much more energy-efficient. You will end up saving money in the long-run if you choose LED pool lights. The initial cost is between $180 and $700. But since their lifespan is usually greater than ten years, you’ll enjoy lower energy bills for all that time.

LED pool lights also come with more than 20 color choices. You can even control some LED lights with a remote control or mobile app.

If you want to impress your guests with attractive and stylish pool lighting, the best choice would be LED lighting for sure. But if you’re on a budget and need simple lighting for occasional pool use, halogen lighting is a good enough choice.

About light waves concept

Light Waves Concept, Inc. is a low-voltage track lighting company specializing in high-end lighting solutions for home and commercial installation.  Before founding this company in 1998, we looked around and saw too many large lighting companies expecting their customers to have  electrician certifications and Trump-sized bank accounts…So, we entered the landscape of the track lighting field with one goal: to bring the joys of designer lighting to everyone– professional and amateur.  Homemaker and designer.  Factory owner and small business CEO alike.

We feel that quality, design and engineering excellence can be affordable and accessible.  We’re passionate about lighting because we believe it’s one of the defining components of a good quality of life.  We find people never know what they’re missing until they find the perfect LWC product for them.  And after that?  Well, after that they’re usually out to the races!  It becomes addicting!  Who hasn’t wondered if their reading light isn’t hurting their eyes?  Or how much nicer their living space would look if they could hang the lights from the ceiling rather than cluttered around the floor and tables?  Or how much more professional and successful they would feel in their business if they had a lighting system that ran like any good company should: smoothly, efficiently and excellently

So, with this dedication we dove in and began to grow exponentially.  An average of 220% a year, in fact!  We now proudly count ourselves among the top ten low-voltage cable lighting companies in the U.S. and our affiliates span the globe.  And we’re still going strong!  One of the most important things to us is customer service.  We count it among our top priorities to give the personal attention and friendly service one might find in the hardware store around the corner- no matter how big we get.

Another one of our mission statements is to remain on the cutting edge– always.  And that means scouring the world for any hint of a breakthrough in lighting engineering while giving our own designers the creative leeway to truly push the envelope.  With this modus operandi we’ve been able to add an average of three new fixtures to our line every six months.  We only use OSRAM Halogen lamps in our fixtures.  These produce the highest and brightest quality of light in the industry.    What’s more- we offer lighting technology that cannot be found anywhere else in the world!

The future of lighting rests in LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes.  These bulbs use almost 90% less electricity than standard bulbs, last up to and beyond ten years and produce an even spectrum of light that is unparalleled.  Soon, these will be in every home and office.  In anticipation of this, we began offering LED products in October of 2004 and we are feverishly adding to our roster.

This is just one of the areas in lighting technology where our engineers and designers are paving the way.  From our offices in NohoManhattan and VeniceItaly we continue to break barriers in the crux of our company- track lighting- and we now offer nearly every other type of lighting source in existence.  It’s been an exciting seven years and I look forward to the future of this exciting industry and bringing it to you.
